Joseph Valentine

Joseph’s story of chaos begins at a young age of six years old when his father passed away unexpectedly.

His life took a harrowing turn.

Joseph’s brother brought him from Colorado to Utah, a change that quickly descended into a nightmare of abuse.

For two long years, he endured unthinkable conditions:

  • locked in a room,
  • confined to a dog kennel
  • and severely beaten.

Despite the trauma, Joseph attended school because the alternative—staying home—was worse.

It was a school principal who ultimately changed the course of his life.

Noticing the visible marks of abuse, he called the authorities, and Joseph entered the foster care system at eight years old.

The Foster Care Merry-Go-Round

While foster care saved him from his brother’s abuse, it was no smooth ride.

Joseph bounced through 13 different foster homes.

Anger, pain, and a deep sense of mistrust followed him everywhere.

“I was just very lost and angry,” he recalls.

Foster parents, unprepared to handle his emotional scars, struggled to provide the stability he needed.

Violence became his language for survival.

“I thought violence was how you solved problems,”

he admits, reflecting on the lessons ingrained in him from years of mistreatment.

He never had the chance to plant roots, build connections, or truly heal.

Down the Rabbit Hole of Addiction

By junior high, Joseph turned to drugs as an escape.

Drinking started early, and by high school, meth had entered the picture.

Addiction consumed him, driving him into a whirlwind of crime to support his habit.

By 18, Joseph had been arrested multiple times, and his path of destruction landed him in federal prison.

Over a decade, Joseph racked up 37 felonies and spent 10 years behind bars.

“I just didn’t want to be doing this anymore,”

he says of the moment he began to reflect on his life.

Prison gave him time to think and realize he owed himself more than a life defined by addiction and crime.

Breaking the Cycle

Recovery wasn’t a straight line. Even after making strides, Joseph stumbled.

Sobriety eluded him when he tried to party again after 10 years off drugs.

This relapse led to devastating consequences:

  • financial ruin
  • arrests, and toxic relationships.

Yet each low point fueled his determination to change.

One pivotal moment came when he was arrested for domestic violence while under the influence.

“I’m not a believer in violence against women or children,”

he says, his voice tinged with regret.

That day, he made a vow to stop drinking. It was the beginning of a new chapter.

The Climb Toward Redemption

Change Everything

Joseph’s journey to healing was neither fast nor easy.

He moved into sober living, recognizing it as the safest environment to rebuild his life.

“I stayed there for a year, stayed single, and worked on fixing everything I needed to fix,” he shares.

Through therapy, support groups, and self-reflection, Joseph began to unlearn the toxic behaviors ingrained in him since childhood.

He discovered what it meant to have healthy relationships and to protect his peace.

Today, Joseph is a man transformed.

He’s part of the Healing Utah Success Summit, where he shares his story to inspire others battling addiction, mental health struggles, and emotional wounds.

He’s also a published author—his memoir, Against All Odds, chronicles his tumultuous life and hard-won redemption.

Lessons for the Journey

Joseph’s words are clear when asked what advice he’d give someone struggling:

“Kill the noise around you. Get rid of anything that doesn’t support your growth—whether it’s a toxic relationship, an unsupportive environment, or even self-doubt.”

He emphasizes the importance of accountability.

“I had to own every part of my journey, even the ugly parts,” he says.

That ownership, combined with the willingness to make hard choices, is what helped him break free from the cycle of addiction and violence.
