Al’s struggles intensified when he returned to Salt Lake City after a work assignment in Kentucky.

Balancing the demands of overseeing 43 employees and managing numerous projects caused immense stress.

At a party one night, Al was reintroduced to cocaine.

What started as a momentary escape from work soon spiraled into a recurring cycle of use.

The Turning Point: Losing Everything

Al’s wake-up call came in July 2009.

His workplace required a drug test—something he hadn’t faced in 15 years.

Despite desperate attempts to flush his system, the results came back positive.

He lost his job just a month after marrying his new wife.

For three years, Al had hidden his cocaine use from her.

She only knew about his drinking, which they often did together.

Losing his job led to a series of devastating events, including the loss of their home and the eventual breakdown of their 18-year relationship.

As Al worked on himself, he realized he and his wife were growing in different directions.

Discovering the Path to Recovery

Al’s journey into recovery began with deep self-reflection.

He recognized the person he had become wasn’t who he wanted to be.

This realization pushed him to seek healthier outlets for stress and professional support within the recovery community.

Professional help, whether therapy, counseling, or medical treatment, is a crucial part of the recovery process.

One pivotal moment came when Al hit a dark place and considered ending his life.

Thankfully, he rediscovered passions that once brought him joy, like bodybuilding.

Al found healthier ways to cope through therapy, cleaning (his go-to stress relief), meditation, yoga, and connecting with like-minded individuals.

His faith also played a significant role, giving him strength and guidance.

The Importance of Boundaries in Recovery

Al’s most significant challenge was setting boundaries, especially with loved ones.

For years, he tried to support his ex-wife as she struggled with alcoholism.

Eventually, he had to decide to step back for his well-being.

“Boundaries are one of the most important things in recovery,” Al explained.

While challenging, these decisions are necessary to protect oneself and foster personal growth.

Building a Community of Support

Al’s story didn’t conclude with his personal recovery.

He became deeply involved in the recovery community, dedicating his time to helping others.

His networking led him to Malory, a fellow advocate in St. George, Utah.

Together, they hosted events focusing on recovery, suicide prevention, and domestic violence awareness, such as the Healing Utah Success Summit.

These events have increased, attracting hundreds of attendees and sparking a movement to expand nationally.

Al’s podcast, where he shares stories of resilience and recovery, has also gained widespread recognition, connecting people across the globe.

Finding New Outlets for Stress

Al emphasizes the importance of finding healthy outlets for stress.

His journey taught him to lean on physical fitness, music, and spirituality to stay grounded.

“Throwing on upbeat music and cleaning does wonders,” he shared.

“It’s about finding what works for you.”

For Al, staying spiritually connected has been a lifesaver.

Surrendering control to a higher power allowed him to navigate life’s challenges with greater clarity and peace.

Offering Hope to Others

Today, he is a certified crisis recovery coach, working with individuals to rebuild their lives.

He provides one-on-one support, leads group sessions, and offers practical advice based on his experiences.

His message is clear: no matter how dark the path may seem, there is always hope.

By sharing his story and connecting with others, he continues to inspire those struggling with addiction and adversity.
