Story of Transformation and Resilience
“Life gives us the power to choose our own path. As Matthew McConaughey wisely said, “We are the author of our own book.”
We can keep doing what we’ve always done and get the same results, or we can make a change—we can level up.
The choice is always ours.”
Nicholas’s struggle with addiction began at a young age.
Introduced to alcohol and cigarettes at just 8 or 9 years old, he found himself living a double life.
On the outside, he was the good kid who went to church and played football.
But behind closed doors, he was experimenting with substances, unaware of the long-term consequences.
Dishonesty became a pattern that would shape his struggles for years to come.

Seeking Validation in All the Wrong Places
As a teenager, Nicholas fell deeper into substance use and the wrong crowd.
Despite excelling in football, he struggled with identity and validation.
After high school, that structure disappeared, leaving him lost.
Without football to anchor him, he turned to partying and substance abuse more heavily.
A Glimpse of Change
At 19, Nicholas sought something more and cleaned up his life enough to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka.
This experience gave him a sense of purpose, but he quickly fell back into destructive habits upon returning home.
A rushed marriage ended in divorce within six months, sending him into a downward spiral of drug use—including meth, heroin, and cocaine.

Running from the Truth
Hoping a change of scenery would help, Nicholas moved to Idaho.
While he stopped using hard drugs, he replaced them with alcohol, justifying his behavior because drinking was legal.
He later married again, but he kept his addiction a secret, believing that admitting his struggles would make him weak.
When the truth came out, the relationship became toxic, and his wife ultimately left him.
Instead of facing his pain, he turned back to drugs and alcohol.
Hitting Rock Bottom
After moving back home, Nicholas continued to struggle with addiction, working in the oil fields while battling guilt and depression.
He tried to numb his pain through substance use, which eventually led to legal trouble and felony charges.
At his lowest point, he felt hopeless—until he received life-changing news.
He was going to be a father.
The birth of his son, Aven, on October 16, 2013, should have been a turning point.
However, the weight of shame and guilt made it difficult for Nicholas to be the father he wanted to be.
He realized that real change would only come when he stopped running and faced his struggles head-on.

The Power of Healing and Community
Nicholas’s journey to recovery truly began when he acknowledged that he couldn’t do it alone.
He had to learn to love himself before he could love others and find his worth before showing up for those he cared about.
His message to those still struggling is clear:
“You are not alone. You are not beyond hope.
Healing begins with honesty—with yourself and with others.
It takes courage to face the truth, but fundamental transformation is possible with the right support system.”
Your Journey Matters
Nicholas’s story reminds us that we all have struggles, but we also have the power to overcome them.
No matter where someone is in their journey, they are valuable, worthy of love, and capable of change.
A better future is possible by embracing support and taking daily steps forward.
