Manny Lopez's Story
In my youth, I struggled with self-acceptance and dissatisfaction with my life.

At just 17, I found myself incarcerated, and by the time I was released at 23, opportunities were scarce.
My criminal record became a significant barrier, hindering my ability to secure stable employment.
Despite being qualified for numerous positions, rejection became a familiar refrain.
The weight of discouragement was perilous, as I had battled those feelings throughout my life.
Tragically, this led to my return to prison on eleven additional occasions.
The Turning Point: Embracing Responsibility
The pivotal moment in my journey came when I realized that change had to begin within myself.
I understood that I needed to take responsibility for my actions and choices if I wanted to transform my life.
This realization marked the beginning of my path toward healing and recovery.

Breaking the Cycle
As I reflected on my past, I recognized the impact of my choices on my life and my family.
Many parents, like me, aspire to break the cycle of poverty and create a better future for their children.
I was determined to overcome the burdens of my past mistakes and forge a new path for my family.
The Strength of Support
Throughout my journey, I encountered individuals who offered support and guidance.
Their kindness and understanding helped me navigate the challenges I faced.
I learned that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
This support network became instrumental in my recovery, allowing me to rebuild my life with renewed purpose.

The Collective Benefit of Healing
My transformation is not just a personal victory; it has broader societal implications.
When individuals like me can turn their lives around, we contribute positively to our communities.
We become active in societal participation, supporting our families and strengthening our neighborhoods.
This collective healing fosters a brighter future for everyone.
From Labels to Liberation
For much of my life, I felt more at home in prison, as that was the identity the world imposed on me—a criminal.
However, I have since shed those labels.
I can demonstrate to my children and others that life can be different.
I can volunteer at their schools, challenge the stigma, and inspire them to dream bigger.
Inspiring Others to Reignite Their Dreams

Today, I share my story to inspire others.
I speak to youth in the juvenile justice and foster care systems, conveying a message of hope.
I have transformed from someone who felt lost to a provider for my family, actively pursuing my dreams, reconnected with God.
I have discovered true freedom and am committed to being a success story that others can admire.
My journey of redemption and healing continues, and I am determined to help others find their way.
Today I'm Thriving and Helping Others
As the Program Director and Facilitator at Level Up IOP, for the adult substance abuse program, I leverage my past experiences to empower youth and adults on their journeys to recovery and self-discovery.
I’m married to an amazing woman, Mysti Lopez who works with me at Level Up IOP as a facilitator and admissions director.
Together, we understand the struggles of feeling lost and trapped in a cycle of despair, we share our stories of redemption to inspire hope and resilience.
Through engaging workshops and supportive discussions, we create a safe space where individuals can confront challenges, learn from their mistakes, and envision a brighter future.
We aim to equip students with the tools and strategies to break free from their pasts, fostering a sense of community and encouraging them to pursue their dreams with confidence and determination.
By transforming our experiences and the rest of the Level Up IOP team, into a source of strength, we guide each student (client) toward their own path of healing and empowerment.
Rapping for Recovery
I love music and as part of my healing journey, I rap.
I’ve found such a love and passion for those in the recovery community that you can find me getting the crowd going as I rap for recovery.
I created a rap song for Level Up IOP adult substance abuse group that I play a snippet before every group I facilitate.
